Case 4: “Wicked Witch” Ice Cream

(Son with Abuse Problems)

This is a case of a woman, “Jane,” whose son “Eric” had a history of substance abuse. He had been living with her and there was a tendency for her to rescue him when he got into trouble. Recently, he had gone out on his own, but she worried about how he would survive, if he would find a job and if he was staying clean. She wanted to finally get on with her own life but worried about him and feared falling into the rescue mode again.

DTF Part 1: Dream Exploration and Issue Identification

Step 1—Dream summary

Segment 1: “I am riding a bicycle on a road that develops a bike lane. Them I’m in a car and the road has been plowed up and is rough sandy ground. The sand is brown and deep and hard to navigate. I have to slow down to get through it. I continue on and eventually the road becomes lush green grass.

Segment 2: “I am exploring a city with Eric who is elementary school age. We find an ice cream parlor and I decide it would be a nice treat. There is a sign that says the specialty is ‘Wicked Witch’ ice cream. I say to Eric that is something you might like since it sounds like a kid flavor from the Wizard of Oz—ivory color with pastel speckles of fruit. There are long lines at the takeout where they are making huge cones of four to five scoops that look precarious. The store is all in pink inside. We go in to get in line and I see a counter where there is no line and smaller options. There is a flavor on the menu called ‘Zen Violet’–that is the flavor for me. It offers the calming influence of lavender. We decide to sit at the counter rather that stay in line for takeout. It will offer a nice respite/rest on our exploration, especially since I don’t know where we are going and don’t have a map. We sit down and order dishes of ice cream, Wicked Witch for Eric and Zen Violet for me.”

Step 2—Waking life emotional situations at the time: “I continue to be concerned about Eric and what path he will take and how he will survive. I am very concerned that he is going to have to move out of his apartment this week and have nowhere to go. He seems to be living in a state of denial and fantasy about what he wants from his life yet not taking steps to achieve it. He claims to be keeping clean and taking care of himself, yet I’m not sure I believe him. He is too good at saying what he thinks I want to hear. I’m trying to let go and let his decisions and the consequences be his without my trying to fix it. I’m trying to figure out some things in my life—new board interviews and what I
